Joe Hodgkins is a Waterford based multidisciplinary artist and is also an advocate for mental health and suicide awareness. This is a mission he explores in his artworks in various media. Joe developed his short story “Darkness & Despair” for film in 2021. Joe was awarded the Ted and Mary O’Regan Arts Bursary in 2023 which resulted in a published book of poetry titled “A Window Into My Soul”. Joe has performed at spoken-word events and has acted in numerous films with Read Lead Productions.
When Joe’s musical practice was challenged by a debilitating injury, he saw this impairment as an opportunity to transform his practice. Generative AI software has empowered Joe to continue producing original music, overcoming physical limitations. Joe’s latest work “Silent Disco” integrates poetry, music and social awareness in an experience that transcends traditional artistic boundaries.
“Silent Disco” is an installation that exists in vision and sound, bringing participants together in a shared experience that is both physical and virtual. The written words of poetry are partnered with QR codes, allowing participants to listen to Joe’s songs on their own device and headphones. “Silent Disco” is an opportunity for understanding how new technologies can aid inclusion and liberation.
